From Ohm to Om — The ZenMastering Blog

Thoughts on the world of audio recording, mixing, and mastering.

Proactive Beats Reactive

I’m a big fan of being proactive: being prepared. It bears out its value in everything from investing to making an audio CD.

When projects finally make it to mastering, a lot of times there’s not chance to go back to mixing and things that could have been handled easily (and more effectively) in mixing have to be taken care of less effectively in mastering.

I think that a lot of mastering engineers, in an attempt to bolster their value, will tell you everything can be solved in mastering. But my take is to have the artist be proactive, even sending preliminary mixes here for my opinion. I can let them know if anything sounds like it needs adjusting from the mix perspective. That way, when the finished mixes come in for mastering I can be as effective as possible in my work and their recording will sound as good as possible.
