From Ohm to Om — The ZenMastering Blog

Thoughts on the world of audio recording, mixing, and mastering.

Go With Your Gut

Posted on | November 30, 2008 | No Comments

I’m wrapping up the Thanksgiving weekend with my parents, who live in Pittsburgh. It’s cold, which reminds me why I moved to San Diego 21 years ago (at age 19). I had an inkling at the time that the warm weather was where I wanted to spend my life, and some place that had a vibrant musical community.

What I’m reminded of by visiting my family and seeing some old friends is how different my life would have been if I hadn’t moved to San Diego in 1987. The tons of talented (and famous) musicians I would have never met, probably never been introduced to ashtanga yoga, and likely would have never started ZenMastering…not to mention never meeting my wife.

It’s impossible to posit the numerous potential alternate universes you could have lived. But I think the lesson that anyone — especially artists — can take away from this is to go with your gut. Trust yourself. Instincts are something that are hard wired into us, and can never be replaced by technology…be it writing a song, making a recording, or mulling over a life decision.
