Resolution for 2009

A bit of a play on words…har har. Yesterday I listened to a musician’s CD — something from a few years back that was recorded/mixed/mastered “in house” by the same person — and was SHOCKED at how much distortion was on the disc. Most of it from pushing the recording too hard in mastering. It reminded me of the cost of cutting corners and losing objectivity. The music was great, but the recording didn’t serve it.
Listen up, kids (and now that I’m 40 I can say that w/o being trite), it’s 2009 (just about). We’re 25+ years into the digital era. The tools are good and the opportunities to make a world-class recording have never been more more easily available.
Don’t settle for low-quality (or low-resolution) recordings. The world abounds with great sonic tools (for the DIY-ers), studios, and mastering facilities that can deliver professoinal results. Do your homework, take your time, and get it done right. It’s your art…it deserves the best.
That’s my rant. Thanks for indulging me. But it makes me angry when I hear good music poorly recorded.
Oh…happy birthday Frank.
