Latte

I’m fond of audio analogies/similes. I’ll admit, some can be a bit contrived and/or forced. But I think, when the comparison works, it makes you realize that sound production is a process like any other. Breaking it down into an assembly line helps you achieve good results much easier. With that in mind…
A good recording (or, mix) is like a latte.
- Milk = Low frequencies
- Espresso = Midrange
- Foam = High frequencies
All these ingredients are essential to get the proper results. The midrange is, obviously, the most important, as it’s the key ingredient to the flavor. The milk solidifies it and the foam is the icing on the cake.
The key is that if any of these is out of whack, proportionally, you’ve either got a bad latte or you have something else entirely. Cold milk, stale foam, etc.
IMO, it’s the same with making a recording. Good ingredients and the proper ratio of materials.
