Gauging Bass with Inexpensive Speakers

Posted on | March 20, 2009 | No Comments

I work with a producer who has speakers that start rolling off around 100Hz. So, his mixes usually are hit-and-miss as far as accurate low-frequency representation…depending on what he’s working on.

Here’s my suggestion to him:

In your mixes, mute the bass. Get the mixes sounding as good as you can, minus the bass, then add the bass back in slowly to fill things out and supplement the mixes. Also, your speakers don’t have good LF response (it’s a difficult thing for any speaker), but it’s relatively easy for decent headphones to reproduce. So, work with your speakers muting the bass. Get a good, balanced mix. Then put your cans on and bring in the bass until you’re happy. That will probably be a good way to gauge LF.

I think it applies to anyone with small, bookshelf speakers. It’s a cost-effective work-around to having a full-range setup.
