I hate failing. I think it’s embarrassing and it makes me feel…not so smart. But how it makes me feel is more a reflection of me and my personality.
In fact, failure is the best chance you have of learning something new. This was proven to me recently while working with a client. I didn’t deliver what they were looking for so I tried again…and failed on the second attempt as well. That made me stop, reconsider my approach, and move forward with something new; something I’d never done before. The client loved the results. In fact, it was exactly what they were looking for.
Success is important because it builds your self confidence. But it can also lull you into a false sense of security where you make decisions based on past successes instead of considering each situation as unique. When security is stripped away you have to reconsider what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, and how you can use your ingenuity to get from A-B.
My yoga teacher reminded the class yesterday that everyone makes mistakes, some people just pay a higher price. Maybe the highest price you can pay is not learning from the lesson a mistake presents.
