From Ohm to Om — The ZenMastering Blog

Thoughts on the world of audio recording, mixing, and mastering.

Interesting Comparison

I mastered a band’s debut album a few years ago. Great bunch of talented musicians who made an excellent album. For their follow-up recording they decided to use another mastering studio (based in NYC).

Although I was disappointed to not have the chance to master their second album, it gave me the opportunity to hear how another mastering facility treated a band that I had previously mastered.

It’s too subjective for me to state anything really useful…and it’s not the same album, just the same band. Where I went for clarity, the new album has more color. Apples and oranges. And it’s hard to say what was done in mastering and what was recording/mixing. However, one thing that did stick out to me was a fair amount of digital overs on the new project, which I can’t forgive…esp. in a professional mastering facility.
