Digital Shell Game

I now have social networking accounts with Facebook (two, actually…one personal and one for ZM), MySpace, and Twitter, and my blog. Oh, and ZenMastering’s website…but I’ve heard that’s obsolete.
The problem is that new sites keep popping up. Well, it’s what’s great and also what’s problematic. The more there are, the more work you have to do and the less convenient they become. It’s kind of similar to standards in audio and video. DVD-A, SACD, HDCD, QuickTime, WMA, Blu-ray, DVD+R, DVD-R. And that’s just a snapshot of digital formats. There were formats in analog as well: 1/4″ or 1/2″ reel to reel (at 7.5 or 15 ips)? 45 or 33 vinyl…or cassette, VHS or Betamax.
I guess as long as we’re logging in and looking at ads — or buying storage media (reel-to-reel tape, 90 minute cassettes, DV, mini-DV, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, hard drives, flash memory, Kindles, iPods) — then the format we happen to use is just a vehicle. And when we get tired of it we’ll move on to the next “standard”.
I’m glad I do yoga. But should it be Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Hatha, Jivamukti…
