Warm Tape, part 3

Posted on | May 31, 2009 | No Comments

For those who have been following my vintage reel-to-reel exploits, I ran into a bit of a snag. As mentioned in part 2, there was a balance issue that a technician suggested may be based around the tape I was using (too thick). As it turns out, new — and thinner — tape didn’t solve the problem.

The shop’s diagnosis is that the heads needed to be relapped. This, along with a few other issues, made me realize this was not the machine for me (i.e., not in as good of shape as advertised), so I’m returning it to the hi-fi shop.

I’ll keep you posted on getting a new machine…and when the experiment continues.
