Letters to the Editor

An article of mine ran in the May/June 2009 issue of Tape Op magazine. If you don’t subscribe, the piece was about how to help your recordings stand up better in the quality-compromised MP3 world. It drew a few Letters to the Editor, which I’m happy to share below with Larry Crane’s blessing.
Nic found the article useful, and I think he’s right: it offers straight-forward information for people looking to make the most of their recordings in a mediocre-fidelity world.
Michael doesn’t think the article is anything more than common sense. I don’t disagree with him. However, I would take issue with the statement “don’t be surprised if the music we make doesn’t sound as good when listened to in a format worse than it was recorded.”
The point of the article is to take responsibility and arm yourself with (common sense) knowledge within everyone’s reach (i.e., you don’t need to buy a magic processor); to do your part to make sure your mixes DO sound great; and not to blame poor quality on technology, whether it’s a blackface ADAT, a mini-disc recorder, or MP3 compression.
