Substitute Teaching

Recently I had the opportunity to substitute teach part of a class at the Art Institute. The class was Music Technology I, and I guest lectured for 2 hours on the topic of microphones.
I prepared a PowerPoint presentation beforehand and had some recorded examples to play for the class demonstrating different microphones and techniques, but ended up forgetting (!) the CD. So I brainstormed a bit and improvised, and the class went over probably better than I could have planned. The students were attentive and genuinely interested. Afterward, I received this note from one of the attendees:
“A lot of us had class that night together too. We were talking about how much we learned from you. Thanks for coming in and talking to us. The acoustic guitar tracks you recorded with it were so multi-dimensional and awesome!! Thanks for playing us that track.”
The acoustic guitar track was something I played and recorded with my friend’s home-made ribbon mic, so it was fun to get some input on that.
All-in-all, teaching the class was a great experience.
