Thoughts on the world of audio recording, mixing, and mastering.

What Is Technology?

Posted on | August 30, 2009 | No Comments

I saw It Might Get Loud the other night. Good film…I highly recommend it. One thing that struck me was that Jack White talked about technology being something he worked hard to avoid, as it is a type of enemy of musical authenticity.

It made me think that people always regard technology as something that comes after them. To us, today, musical technology is non-linear recording and editing, amp modeling, and things like that. But the x-bracing on an acoustic guitar is technology, too. Before C.F. Martin built guitars with this, there wasn’t the “technology” available to build larger body guitars with steel strings: the dreadnought. And all those blues musicians that Jack White loves were using Martin guitars.

Technology is all around us, whether it’s old or new. Resisting it is more limiting that utilizing it.
