Stupid Musical Things I’ve Done, part 2

Posted on | August 31, 2009 | No Comments

Just about a year ago I posted Stupid Musical Things I’ve Done, part 1. It took me almost a year, but I finally thought of another stupid thing I’ve done in my music career.

I’m generally a very methodical guy. But I do have a tendency to ignore some common sense concepts if I know that there’s no harm being done. In my early mastering career, I had a friend over to listen to her mixes and see if I could improve on them. After I transferred the tracks from her CD to my workstation, I put the disc back in its jewel case and got to work…with her by my side.

At some point, I took my cup of coffee and placed it on the jewel case, as if it was a drink coaster. Knowing full well that the cup wasn’t even physically touching the CD and it was in no danger; it escaped me how rude this must have looked to her. No worries, she quickly reminded me with a horrified gasp.

It was a good lesson to me that perception is an important thing.
