From Ohm to Om — The ZenMastering Blog

Thoughts on the world of audio recording, mixing, and mastering.

It’s About Lightness

Posted on | October 21, 2009 | No Comments

I was in yoga this morning and, as much of the class’s feet came thumping to the ground after a balancing pose, the teacher reminded us that yoga is about lightness: finding balance so your practice is less force and more flow.

It reminded me that the same is true of mastering. The more I learn about the craft, the less I do to accomplish the results. When mastering engineers are young, they’re enthusiastic but inexperienced. This leads to forcing a lot of their will on the recordings instead of listening to what (if anything) needs to be done. Over time — if they’re good — engineers will learn to achieve the result with less effort and ultimately be less destructive to the audio file they’re working on. Less force and more flow.
