From Ohm to Om — The ZenMastering Blog

Thoughts on the world of audio recording, mixing, and mastering.

Methodology

I don’t master the way most engineers do, where the M.E. pretty much runs through the album in 3-4 hours, has an assistant do the fades and then cut a reference disc. After working on hundreds of projects and sitting in on a lot of other engineer’s mastering sessions, I find that method too short-sighted.

After musicians spend weeks (or months) recording and mixing, I feel that the album requires AT LEAST a few listens and evaluations. I generally work on a project in small spurts over the course of a few days, keeping my objectivity and ears fresh. Then, when I’m satisfied I have what I’m looking for I’ll create a reference disc for the client.
